Non-Fire Rated Drop Ceilings

If you have installed a non-fire rated drop ceiling in your building, there are some important actions you'll need to do.

When installing electrical wires and communication cables, you'll need extra support wires. All wiring and cables will need to be supported on both ends.

Cable tray systems or trapeze arrangements are great options. However, you're not required to identify these wires and cables like you would in a fire-rated drop ceiling. This gives you more latitude when installing your non-fire rated drop ceiling.

Fire-rated Drop Ceilings

Fire-rated drop ceiling codes allow you to install additional support wire but they do not require you to install a cable tray system or trapeze arrangement.

Remember not to use any of the ceiling’s grid wires to support electrical wires or cables. Instead, additional support wires will need to be installed on both ends of the wiring or cables.

Additionally, you will be required to tag each support wire for identification purposes. This can be achieved using tags or distinguishable colors to separate each support wire.
