Drop Ceilings Birmingham AL: Inexpensive Options for a Basement Ceiling

Birmingham Ceilings & Walls • Oct 03, 2016

In a majority of homes, the basement is an unused space where you'll normally find storage.

Since the basement is located on the lower level, it's common to see plumbing pipes, electrical wiring and structural bracing jutting out of the walls and ceiling.

When remodeling a basement, you'll want to begin by taking everything out, cleaning the floor, painting the walls and making any repairs.

So now, what about the ceiling? Here are inexpensive options for a basement ceiling.

Fabric Ceiling

Fabric ceilings are a great, inexpensive option for your basement, especially when obstacles extend below the parallel running timber or steel support structure.

They are highly convenient to set up since all you need is a staple gun. It's used to stretch the fabric across the parallel running timber or steel support structure.

This enables you to drop the fabric, creating a pillow effect. You'll need to cover the exposed ends to create an aesthetic look. To do this, roll a dowel around the ends.

You can also nail the dowels where the basement wall meets the basement ceiling. Opt for the nylon-reinforced fabric for added effect which is the same method used by stores.

Drop Ceiling Installation

Standard Drop Ceiling

The drop ceiling is a common option that's not only affordable but suitable for a basement. Drop ceilings can hide plumbing, structural braces and electrical conduits.

These ceilings are composed of a grid which is attached on timber running parallel or a steel support structure by a metal-frame and support-wires.

To complete the drop-ceiling, squared panels are installed and help to cover the metallic grid. The best thing about drop ceilings is that they still provide easy access to plumbing, electrical wires and ducts running along the basement ceiling.

Soffits

Soffits are also a great option that can be used to cover the plumbing pipes, electrical wires and ducts running along the basement ceiling. Three sided boxes, they can be placed around items you want to hide.

You can create soffits from plywood and secure them to the exterior of the cleat. Recessed ceilings go well with soffits, especially when you place them around the perimeter of the basement. You can even fasten them together and create a false beam effect.
