If the look you want is a smooth surface ceiling install, then drywall is probably for you. But, remember that you won’t have any above-ceiling access for running wires, ducts, etc. with a drywall ceiling.

You will, however, probably gain more ceiling height with drywall than with a drop ceiling since the drywall can attach to your main floor joists, taking up less than an inch of space.

You’ll need two to possibly six inches for a drop ceiling. So, if your ceiling height is already low, you should opt for drywall for your ceiling install.

Drop-Ceiling Styles and Textures

Now, on the other hand, if you have plenty of ceiling height in your basement for your ceiling install, you could opt for a drop ceiling. You’ll also have more styles, colors and textures to choose from. 

You can get embossed drop-ceiling tiles that look just like an expensive stamped tin ceiling. Or if that’s not your style, you can get wood-grained tiles for your drop ceiling. They come in some really nice wood finishes like cherry and are quite realistic. They impart a warm woodsy feeling to any room.

So, either way, your choice is pretty wide. If you’re short on ceiling height, but don’t want just a plain drywall ceiling, you could do a drywall ceiling install and finish it off with bead-board for a custom look.

You could also add faux beams that look like real wood for a more rustic look. Or, if ceiling height is not a problem, you can get a bit more stylish with all of the drop ceiling choices and an easy ceiling install.
