Step By Step Guide

Here is a step by step process on insulating a drop ceiling.

Step One: Are the tiles able to support the insulation weight?

Normally insulation is fairly lightweight but that weight still needs to be inspected. Lack of inspection could potentially lead to the tile breaking due to the weight of the insulation and end up costing you more.

The first thing you need to do is replace all fiberglass tiles before continuing. Fiberglass ceiling tiles will not support the insulation weight. If the room is fitted with common wood and gypsum ceiling tiles, you need to ensure they are 15 mm thick for safety of batt insulation.

Step Two: Install stronger hanger wires.

When insulation is installed, extra weight will be added to the metal grid to strengthen it. You'll need to install additional hanger wires.

To ensure sturdiness, start by installing more hanger wires between the existing hanger wires. This will help to support the weight of the grid and the insulated ceiling.

Step Three: Buy batt insulation.

Purchase paper or foil backed insulation from the nearest home improvement store. Before purchasing, you'll need to measure the grid from the joists in order to determine which depth of batting to purchase.

Finally, you need to know the total amount of batt insulation to buy. To do this, calculate the area of the suspended ceiling.

Step Four: Move the ceiling tiles.

Start by sliding the ceiling tiles out of place beginning with the first one at the end of the room. Finish the first row and then proceed to the other rows. You don’t have to take them down completely from the grid since reinstalling them is difficult.

Step Five: Install batt insulation.

Start by installing the batt insulation strip above the grid into the first row. Ensure the backing is facing downwards. You need to set the insulation flush against hanger wires in order to ensure that no air space exists between neighboring batt strips.

Step Six: Slide tiles back into place.

Once you have finished applying batt insulation, slide the tiles back into place. You'll want to ensure the insulation rests on top. Repeat the process for all tiles.
